Veteran Bollywood actress Jaya Bachchan, who recently completed 52 years of marriage with Amitabh Bachchan, says marriage is “an outdated institution,” while expressing her wish for her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, who is soon to turn 28, to get married.
The 77-year-old actress believes she is too old to advise young women about starting a family and raising children, adding that today’s generation is far more perceptive and independent.
“Just enjoy life,” Jaya said while speaking to We The Women about marriage.
“I don’t want Navya to get married,” she added in response to a question about whether she would like to see Navya step away from her career after marriage.
When asked to elaborate on her view that marriage is becoming outdated, the Abhimaan actress shared that today’s youth are smart, self-assured, and capable of navigating life on their own and, hence, many conventional expectations have become optional.
She says marriage as well as staying single has problems of their own, and true happiness should take precedence over societal pressures.
Jaya Bhaduri, now known as Jaya Bachchan, started her career as a teenager when she first appeared on-screen in the famous 1963 Satyajit Ray film titled Mahanagar.
She then came back as a lead actress in the film Guddi and has wowed the audience with many commendable acts in films ever since, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema.
