Some parts of Karachi could face water shortages as the southern port city is experiencing nearly 100 million gallons shortfall due to a major power failure at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) reported on Sunday.
Dhabeji, the city’s primary water intake facility, supplies several major districts and has a long history of technical faults and electrical disruptions.
According to a KWSC spokesperson, the latest breakdown occurred at 6:35am in the station’s second phase, disabling line number 5 and forcing two pumps to shut down. The utility warned that this interruption could significantly reduce the city’s water supply.
KWSC said repair work has begun on an emergency basis and assured residents that teams are trying to restore operations as quickly as possible. Once repairs are completed, the station is expected to return to normal functioning.
The statement also noted previous incidents, including a 36-hour shutdown earlier in November and earlier outages this year that caused shortages ranging from 100MGD to 350MGD. Persistent maintenance issues and recurring power failures have repeatedly left many neighborhoods struggling with severe water shortages.
