The Punjab government on Thursday froze all assets belonging to the outlawed Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).
According to an official notification, the provincial interior ministry directed relevant officers to submit a compliance report by November 15.
This action follows last month’s decision by Pakistan’s federal interior ministry, which formally declared TLP a proscribed organization under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The federal cabinet had unanimously approved the ban after violent clashes between TLP supporters and law enforcement personnel earlier in the month, mainly in Punjab. While the party claimed its march toward Islamabad was intended to be peaceful and aimed at staging a sit-in outside the US Embassy to express solidarity with Gaza, the protests turned violent.
Prior to the federal government’s decision, the Punjab cabinet had endorsed the recommendation to ban the group.
The move came shortly after thousands of TLP workers clashed with police on the outskirts of Lahore, resulting in five deaths, including two policemen, and injuries to more than 100 officers and dozens of protesters.
