NEPRA has started working on changing solar energy rates. Experts believe that as a result of this move, consumers will suffer heavy losses while IPPs will benefit.
According to details, the government has assigned the task to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to revise solar rates. In a report, it has been claimed with reference to sources in the Ministry of Power that a proposal is under consideration to reduce the solar rate from Rs. 23 to Rs. 10 per unit.
The report, quoting sources, stated that in the next phase, a proposal to abolish solar payback rates is under consideration, and the consumer will not receive any payment from the system for electricity generated from solar power.
The consumer will be bound to use 100% of solar energy for personal consumption, whereas currently, consumers are being paid Rs. 125 billion under the head of solar.
The government has prepared to halt the rapid development of the solar system. According to the report, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the government to make payments to IPPs. The solar system is rapidly becoming an alternative to IPPs.
It is noteworthy that IPPs have received heavy payments from the public for years and, in return, gave the country load-shedding and overbilling. In the past, multiple illegal actions by IPPs, including K-Electric, were proven.
