İbrahim Kalın, the head of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and a trusted aide of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who played a key role in the Pakistan-Afghanistan talks held in Doha, has once again emerged as a prominent figure on the global diplomatic stage.
According to Turkish media, Kalın played an important role in making the recent Pakistan-Afghanistan negotiations in Doha productive. Reports suggest that he ensured both sides — Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban — did not leave the table without shaking hands. He is now hosting the ongoing round of talks in Istanbul.
Who is İbrahim Kalın?
Born in 1971 in Istanbul, İbrahim Kalın earned his bachelor’s degree in History from Istanbul University, a master’s from the International Islamic University Malaysia, and a Ph.D. from George Washington University in 2002.
In 2005, he founded the government-affiliated think tank SETA Foundation, and in 2014, he was appointed as the Presidential Spokesperson for President Erdoğan.
Kalın has long been active in shaping Turkey’s foreign policy and has mediated in several international crises, including the Turkey-Russia conflict and the Qatar-UAE dispute.
In recent years, he has also played a significant role in ceasefire efforts in Gaza and negotiations related to Syria. Turkish sources say President Erdoğan has complete trust in him — earning him the nickname “the President’s shadow” in Türkiye.
