During a meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Saturday, directives were issued to expedite the ‘Air Punjab’ project and take measures for the ‘Murree Glass Train’ project.
The Air Punjab Project is an ambitious initiative by the Government of Punjab, Pakistan, to establish the province’s first regional airline, named “Air Punjab Private Limited.”
Approved in 2025 under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, it aims to enhance domestic and international air connectivity, boost economic growth, and create jobs in the aviation sector.
In April 2025, the Chief Minister gave in-principle approval for the “Air Punjab” project.
In today’s meeting officials requested 1 billion rupees in funding from the Finance Department to operationalize the project.
It was decided to immediately lease four Airbus aircraft for the airline.
The project is expected to be functional within 8 to 12 months.
Initially, Air Punjab will operate flights between Lahore and Islamabad.
Following a successful first year, the airline plans to introduce international flights as well.
Murree Glass Train Project
Another goal related to this project is the launch of a tourist glass train service between Rawalpindi and Murree to promote tourism in the region.

Based on reports from February 2025, the project’s feasibility study was due to be completed by April 2025, with international tendering and implementation to follow under a public-private partnership.
However, there has been no official confirmation of a start date since January 2025.
The 55 to 65-kilometer track will run from Rawalpindi to Murree, passing through the scenic Margalla Hills.
The train will feature glass-walled coaches, allowing passengers to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding scenery during their journey.
