Ali Tareen, owner of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans, has publicly defied the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) legal notice and demand for an apology, literally tearing it apart in a symbolic act of defiance.

While the young franchise owner did offer a “public apology” as the PCB demanded, his remarks have only deepened the controversy surrounding him and the PSL administration.

On Thursday night, Tareen launched a scathing critique of the PSL management, expressing frustration with what he called their “mediocre mindset.”

Earlier that day, the PSL administration had formally warned Tareen, citing his repeated public criticism of the PCB and the league. The board stated that unless he issued a public apology, it would pursue legal action against him.

This move marked a serious escalation in the ongoing tensions between Multan Sultans and the PCB.

Later, Tareen posted a video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), holding what he claimed was the official legal notice from the PSL management.

Displaying the document to the camera, he began, “Friends, our beloved PSL administration has sent me a legal notice. They’ve said that if I don’t retract my statements and publicly apologize, they’ll terminate the Multan Sultans’ franchise agreement and blacklist me for life — so that I can never own any team again.”

Tareen continued his critique, saying “That’s the real problem — you don’t actually want to work with your stakeholders. You just want us to stay quiet and follow your lead. You’ve become so accustomed to surrounding yourselves with yes-men that you can’t tolerate even the slightest criticism.”

He complained that the PCB had never once contacted him directly — “not a single call, message, email, or meeting request” — to discuss issues or find solutions collaboratively. Instead, he said, the board’s first step was to send him a legal notice.

Tareen went on to say, “If you had even a bit of competence, you’d know that this is not how problems are solved. And if you think these threats will silence me, you’re mistaken. I love this league — maybe even more than you do — because this league belongs to us, the fans, the people of Pakistan. It’s not yours to control.”

Offering a mix of sarcasm and sincerity, Tareen then extended what he called a public apology:

“You’ve demanded a public apology — even though my legal team says I don’t need to, since I said nothing wrong. But fine, a bigger person always apologizes. So, I apologize. I apologize for wanting the PSL to be better. I apologize for raising my voice about problems. I apologize for being unhappy with your mediocre thinking. That’s my mistake, not yours.”

Continuing in the same ironic tone, he added, “I apologize for being frustrated that you celebrate each other for doing so little. You’re free to keep doing that. And I apologize for wishing that capable and talented people were part of the PSL management — though I know that’s asking for too much, maybe even impossible.”
