The prosecution has requested the court to sentence former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid to death, as reported by international media.
According to international media, fugitive since last year, Sheikh Hasina Wajid is facing trial for crimes against humanity over the brutal crackdown on the 2024 student protest movement.
An audio leak of Sheikh Hasina Wajid surfaced in which she was allegedly ordering the use of lethal weapons against protesters. However, Sheikh Hasina Wajid has denied these allegations, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
Sheikh Hasina is living in exile in India. She is accused of ordering security forces to use lethal force, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,400 people.
Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said Sheikh Hasina Wajid deserves the death penalty 1,400 times, but since that is not possible, they are requesting at least one death sentence. He stated that Sheikh Hasina Wajid’s objective was to use power to make herself and her family permanent rulers.
The Chief Prosecutor said Sheikh Hasina Wajid has become a hardened criminal and shows no remorse for her brutality. Bangladesh’s interim administrative head, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has also formally demanded Sheikh Hasina Wajid’s extradition from India.
