Dr. Olena Yatsentyk, a dermatologist and physiotherapy specialist from Ukraine, refused to leave Gaza even when most international organizations had evacuated and hospitals had turned to rubble.
According to renowned journalist and analyst Zia Chitrali, Dr. Olena and her husband—also a doctor—decided at the onset of the war not to abandon their patients. “I made a promise to my patients,” she said. “As long as even one injured person remains, I will stay.”
When medical supplies ran out, Dr. Olena created ointments using household ingredients. When the power was cut, she continued treatment under the light of her phone. Every day, under the shadow of airstrikes, she reached the wounded, washed dust from children’s faces, and shared words of hope.

A Palestinian journalist wrote about her:
“Everything in Gaza had been destroyed, but the smile on this stranger’s face remained.”
After the ceasefire, when Dr. Olena returned to her destroyed clinic, she found a message written on the door:
“This is the place where a foreigner taught us that love knows no borders.”
Today, Dr. Olena remains in Gaza, still treating the wounded—a living reminder that the truest face of humanity is sacrifice.
