The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has strongly denied viral social media claims suggesting that Pakistan will experience an “extremely cold winter” this year, calling them “scientifically unfounded and not supported by PMD’s seasonal outlook or current global climate indicators.”
In an official statement issued on Wednesday, a PMD spokesperson clarified that the upcoming winter (December to February) is expected to bring near-normal to slightly above-normal temperatures, with slightly below-normal rainfall across most parts of the country.
“While localized cold spells are likely due to passing western disturbances, no evidence supports an exceptionally severe or record-breaking cold season across Pakistan,” the statement read.
The department also noted the ongoing weak to moderate La Niña phase, which typically leads to fewer and milder winter weather systems in the region.
“Such conditions usually result in fewer and weaker western disturbances reaching the country,” the spokesperson said, adding that snowfall activity and cold intensity are likely to remain moderate.
The PMD urged the public to rely only on official forecasts. “Circulating false information about weather and climate can cause unnecessary alarm and public confusion,” the spokesperson warned, encouraging citizens to stay informed via PMD’s official website and verified channels.
