New Delhi: India’s Ministry of External Affairs has denied reports of a conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the suspension of Russian oil imports.
Responding to media queries, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the government has already issued a statement addressing the U.S. remarks on energy-related matters.
The spokesperson clarified that, to their knowledge, no phone conversation took place between Modi and Trump in recent days.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow relies on official statements from India and China concerning the purchase of Russian oil.
Trump had earlier claimed, during a media briefing at the Oval Office, that Prime Minister Modi had assured him that India would stop buying oil from Russia.
The former U.S. president said he was “not happy” with India’s purchases of Russian oil but added that the issue had been resolved, noting that India cannot halt imports immediately but will do so soon.
It is worth noting that the United States had imposed a 50% tariff on Indian oil imports from Russia amid the ongoing trade tensions.
