A man released from Karachi Central Jail was killed shortly after his release. The deceased had contracted a love marriage, which had angered his opponents.
According to police, the victim was identified as Ameer Bakhsh, who was shot and stabbed to death near the Central Jail soon after being released.
Police said the deceased originally hailed from Larkana and had married by choice. His opponents were aware of his impending release and had ambushed him. As soon as Ameer Bakhsh stepped out of the jail, he was attacked with a knife just a few steps away and killed.
It is worth mentioning that in several cities across Pakistan, marrying by choice rather than under family arrangements is still considered taboo, and incidents of honor killings against couples who marry for love are on the rise.
In many such cases, even when the couples flee their hometowns or villages and settle in other cities, their relatives often trace and kill them in the name of honor. Despite legal action, authorities have failed to curb such crimes.
