The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), in collaboration with provincial governments, has rolled out a new automated system designed to make birth and death registration faster, more transparent, and more efficient.
The initiative, launched under the direction of the Federal Interior Minister, is part of the government’s broader push to modernize public services and eliminate delays and inefficiencies in vital event registration.
These reforms fall under the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework, approved by the Prime Minister on January 1. The framework aims to establish a unified, technology-driven mechanism for the timely and accurate recording of births and deaths across Pakistan.
As part of a pilot phase, NADRA has implemented cutting-edge digital registration systems in over 50 hospitals and healthcare centres nationwide. These include prominent institutions such as PIMS, CDA, and FG hospitals in Islamabad; Lady Aitchison Hospital in Lahore; as well as medical facilities in Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Sindh.
Through this system, hospitals are now digitally connected with NADRA, allowing real-time reporting of births and deaths. Upon the occurrence of a vital event, NADRA instantly notifies the parents or legal heirs via a mobile app and SMS, guiding them through the next steps to complete registration at their respective Union Council.
The impact has been immediate: to date, NADRA has recorded over 4,000 birth notifications and 407 death notifications through the new system.
