ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has submitted a written report to Parliament outlining the government’s strategy to promote a cashless economy across Pakistan.
According to the report, the government has set a target of Rs 115 billion in digital transactions for the current fiscal year, as part of the Cashless Pakistan Strategy approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Aurangzeb said the initiative aims to ensure payments are easy, secure, and accessible to all, aligning with the government’s vision of a digital economy by June 2026.
The report identifies four key goals under this vision:
Increasing the volume of digital transactions to Rs 115 billion;
Expanding the number of merchants using digital payment methods, including QR codes, to 2 million;
Growing the number of digital app users from 95 million to 120 million;
Ensuring 100 percent collection of remittances through digital channels.
It added that efforts are underway to strengthen digital infrastructure and expand internet access nationwide.
Government payments and receipts are being rapidly digitized through the Raast system, while the Raast QR Code will be implemented through banks and payment institutions to facilitate seamless transactions.
