ISLAMABAD: Former senator Mushtaq Ahmed returned to Pakistan on Thursday after being released from Israeli detention following his participation in the “Global Steadfastness Flotilla,” an international convoy carrying aid for Gaza.
Ahmed arrived at Islamabad International Airport aboard a private airline flight from Bahrain, where he was greeted by supporters waving Palestinian flags. A grand reception was held at the airport to welcome him home.
The former senator had led the Pakistani delegation in the 45-vessel flotilla that departed from Spain last month, aiming to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza and challenge Israel’s longstanding blockade of the territory.
The convoy, which included activists, politicians, and prominent environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg, was intercepted by Israeli forces as it approached Gaza. All those on board were detained and later deported.
Earlier, Pakistan’s embassy in Jordan confirmed Mushtaq Ahmed’s safe departure for Pakistan via a post on X, stating:
“On the instructions of Pakistan’s honourable Deputy Prime Minister, the Pakistani embassy in Jordan ensured all necessary arrangements for his safe and smooth departure.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had also spoken with Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, expressing gratitude for Jordan’s assistance in receiving the released activists and facilitating their repatriation.
