The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has said it will hand over its weapons to an established, sovereign Palestinian state.
According to foreign media reports, talks in Cairo between Hamas and mediators have made significant progress, with Hamas indicating it would hand over its arms to a sovereign Palestinian state. Hamas also said it has informed the United States of its decision on laying down arms.
Hamas leader Abu Marzouk said Gaza’s future is a national issue and not a decision that Hamas can make alone; detailed negotiations through mediators are essential to implement any plan.
He added that Hamas is prepared to negotiate on all matters related to its movement and weapons, and that talks will also cover the structure and administrative aspects of a peace force.
Abu Marzouk further said that U.S. President Donald Trump views the Palestinians’ future positively, and that Hamas has agreed to transfer control of Gaza to independent figures linked to the Palestinian Authority.
He said guarantees for a permanent Israeli withdrawal have been obtained from the United States via Qatar. He also noted that they are collecting the bodies of Israeli hostages killed in Israeli bombardment.
The Hamas leader said they have requested a halt to Israeli bombing to recover the bodies. He reiterated that Hamas is a national liberation movement and rejected being classified as a terrorist organization.
