Manchester, UK – A tragic incident occurred outside a synagogue in Manchester where two people were killed and three others injured after a man carried out a stabbing and subsequent vehicle-ramming attack during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
According to police, the assailant first attacked people with a knife before driving a vehicle into the crowd. One individual, believed to be the attacker, was shot dead at the scene by police. Among the injured is a security guard, who was taken to hospital for treatment.
Emergency services immediately cordoned off the area, with police enacting “Operation Plato,” a special protocol used in response to major terrorist incidents.
Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham confirmed that the situation is now under control but investigations are ongoing. He urged the public to stay away from the area, adding that the attacker was “most likely dead.”
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed sorrow over the attack, describing it as “especially painful” since it occurred on Yom Kippur.
He extended condolences to the affected families and praised the emergency services for their swift response.
