A woman fell and died after her dress being stuck in the chain sprocket of the rear wheel of the motorcycle near Jail Chorangi, Karachi.
The deceased, Shazia, was riding a motorcycle with her son Zain. She had gone to Mehmoodabad to deliver her elder daughter’s wedding invitation card. Shazia met with the accident on her way back home.
Her daughter’s wedding was scheduled in 20 days. Shazia was the mother of two sons and two daughters.
It is worth mentioning that loose clothing with trailing ends is a significant cause of road traffic injuries among female pillion riders in the city.
Experts have suggested several preventive measures. Firstly, public awareness campaigns are needed to highlight the risks associated with loose garments and the importance of wearing helmets. Secondly, road users — especially women — should be educated on safer clothing practices while riding motorcycles.
This includes avoiding long, flowing scarves or dupattas and instead opting for shorter scarves or securely wrapping and tucking them to prevent any loose ends that could get caught in the bike’s moving parts.
