Top journalists question the disappearance of the editorial from Pakistan’s leading Urdu daily as Daily Jang, was published without an editorial, both yesterday and again today.
Media veterans call the move “unprecedented” as silence replaces the paper’s voice.
It should be noted that the editorial page of any newspaper reflects its editorial policy and perspective. It’s the platform where a paper shares its own analysis and opinions rather than simply reporting news.
Daily Jang, which holds a significant place in Pakistan’s journalistic, political, social, and historical landscape, founded in 1939. It was launched in Delhi during World War II by founder Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman.
Now, the paper’s long-standing editorial has suddenly ceased publication, with no official explanation provided by the management. The suspension has raised eyebrows among journalists and media professionals, who describe the move as unprecedented and alarming in the world of journalism.
Veteran journalist Shaheen Sehbai reacted on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“What’s happened to Jang? Today, something unprecedented in media — the largest newspaper has published an editorial page without an editorial.”
He continued: “Have all the editors gone on vacation? Or was there nothing praiseworthy to say about the government? I’m saddened — I worked with this group for 11 years and never saw anything like this.”
Senior journalist Mehmood Sham voiced concern over the missing editorial, writing in a Facebook post:
“For the first time in 200 years of Urdu journalism, the largest Urdu newspaper, Jang, has been published without an editorial.”

Sham, a respected journalist, poet, and former editor at Jang, added in another post:
“The news was already fading — now the editorial is gone too. The mirror that once reflected the spirit of the times is no more.”

Ihtisham-ul-Haq, a journalist and producer with private channel Hum News, commented:
“Jang was published without an editorial. Editorials used to hold a mirror to governments — but now that mirror seems irrelevant.”

Another journalist, Saqib Bashir, questioned on X:
“It’s shocking — why is Jang’s editorial missing?”
