GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government has announced that families affected by the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Saro Gah Nullah, Tali Das village of Ghizer district, will be resettled in a newly established permanent village.
Government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said on Friday that Chief Minister Gulbar Khan will consult Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the establishment of the alternative settlement for displaced families.
The chief minister visited the affected area to meet survivors, assess damage, and review rescue operations. He directed authorities to urgently restore water, electricity, and communication services in the flood-hit region, stressing that swift action was vital for the well-being of residents.
Faraq added that the government will honour local heroes who helped save lives during the disaster. A shepherd who alerted authorities in time, preventing greater loss of life, will receive a cash award and certificate of appreciation in a ceremony at the CM Secretariat. A young man from Dain who carried out exemplary rescue work will also be rewarded for his bravery.
The spokesperson admitted that the early warning system in Ghizer district was not operational at the time of the disaster. “It was due to the timely action of the shepherd that hundreds of lives were saved,” he noted.
He further expressed hope that the federal government would support G-B in building the alternative village and in the construction of an RCC bridge in Dain.
