The Sindh cabinet has approved a proposal from the Excise and Taxation Department to launch a CNIC-linked vehicle registration system with personalized registration marks (PRMs), under which the number plate will remain with the owner after they sell the vehicle, enabling them to reuse it or return it to the authorities.
According to the Chief Minister House, the cabinet endorsed the model and related legal amendments to align Sindh’s system with global best practices and reforms implemented in the Islamabad Capital Territory. Under the new framework, the Vehicle Identification Number will remain tied to the chassis, serving as the vehicle’s permanent identifier.
The system, integrated with NADRA’s national database, will enable real-time traceability, improve taxpayer asset tracking, and standardize registration across provinces. Owners will have the choice to reuse their PRMs or relinquish them.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah instructed the Excise and Taxation Department to develop and test the system before initiating the necessary legislative changes, describing it as a modernized, owner-focused reform enhancing administrative efficiency and international compatibility.
