Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking bail in several cases related to the May 9 incidents.
The move comes after the Lahore High Court rejected his bail applications. In his petition, Imran Khan has requested the Supreme Court to overturn the High Court’s decision and grant him relief.
The federal government and Inspector Imran Sadiq of Gulberg Police Station have been named as respondents.
Earlier, the Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore had rejected Imran Khan’s post-arrest bail requests in eight separate cases linked to the violent events of May 9, including the attack on Jinnah House. Judge Manzar Ali Gul had presided over those hearings.
Imran Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, argued that his client had no role in the violence or arson on May 9. He stated that Khan was in custody at the time of the events and later publicly condemned the unrest.
He also claimed that the charges against Khan were politically motivated.
The lawyer said that several legal decisions had already gone against the government in similar cases, and he presented nearly 25 court decisions to support his arguments.
He also pointed out that in all the cases, the complainants were police officials.
Criticizing the government’s approach, the lawyer accused it of shifting its narrative repeatedly, comparing it to a cricket strategy full of confusing deliveries like googlies and off-breaks.
