Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has announced the allocation of 80-square-yard residential plots to families affected by the recent building collapse in Lyari, describing the incident as a deeply distressing tragedy.
He asked the victims to visit Governor House for registration and assured that the provincial administration would provide six months’ rent support to assist in their rehabilitation.
During a visit to the collapse site, Governor Tessori underscored the need for systemic reform rather than merely replacing officials.
Meanwhile, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon acknowledged the provincial government’s limited capacity to relocate residents from the 740 buildings declared unsafe across Sindh, including 51 categorized as extremely dangerous.
He said that only 11 of the most critical structures have been evacuated thus far. While permanent relocation is not currently feasible, he noted that temporary shelter could be offered, similar to arrangements during floods and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Memon further confirmed that the Sindh Building Control Authority has commenced demolition of unsafe structures surrounding the collapsed five-story building in Lyari’s Baghdadi area, where at least 27 people lost their lives.
