Actor Asim Mehmood on Friday criticized the selective application of Islamic laws, following reports of an out-of-court settlement in the Karsaz accident case.
A sessions court in Karachi granted bail to Natasha Danish — the driver involved in last month’s Karsaz accident — and her husband, after the victims’ family pardoned them through a compromise under the Islamic law of Diyat.
Natasha had been booked on manslaughter charges after her speeding Toyota Land Cruiser struck three motorcycles and a car on Karsaz Road on August 19, killing 60-year-old Imran Arif and his 22-year-old daughter, Amna, while injuring three others.
Taking to Instagram, Asim Mehmood condemned the unequal treatment of the rich and the poor under the law, stating, “Why are rape suspects not punished under Islamic law if Diyat was used to pardon those involved in the Karsaz accident?”
He continued, “Why aren’t thieves’ hands cut off when they are caught committing a crime?”
The “Inteqam” actor further commented, “Islamic laws are selectively applied to favor the powerful, while Pakistan’s legal system is used to undermine the weak.”
