Starbucks, a beleaguered worldwide coffee business, has announced that Brian Niccol will take over as chairman and CEO, succeeding the retiring Indian-origin CEO Laxman Narasimhan.
Brian Niccol, currently the head of the Mexican grill chain Chipotle, will take over the leadership of Starbucks. The company’s former CEO, Howard Schultz, who played a key role in expanding Starbucks into a global powerhouse, expressed confidence in Niccol, stating that he is “the leader Starbucks needs at a pivotal moment in its history.”
This leadership change comes as Starbucks faces significant challenges, including a decline in sales due to backlash over price increases and boycotts related to the Israel-Gaza conflict. The company reported a “significant impact on traffic and sales” in the Middle East after boycotts began in response to the ongoing Israeli actions in Gaza.
Earlier reports indicated that Starbucks had lost nearly $11 billion in market value by the end of 2023, driven by intense boycotts, employee strikes in support of Palestine, and underwhelming holiday promotions.
