Dr. Samreen Hussain, the wife of PPP leader Dr. Asim Hussain and Vice Chancellor of Dawood University of Engineering & Technology Karachi, escaped unharmed from a gun attack in Karachi on Tuesday.
“Dr. Samreen is safe,” confirmed DIG West Imran Balouch, adding that the incident might have been an attempted robbery.
The attack occurred in Orangi Town. “It’s too early to draw any conclusions, but the investigation is underway,” DIG West stated.
Dr. Samreen shared that she had been visiting a college in Orangi Town for the past two days to prepare for Independence Day celebrations.
“I was at a college in Orangi Town for tomorrow’s celebration when unidentified men entered the premises and fired at my car,” she explained.
The bullet struck the vehicle’s radiator, prompting Dr. Samreen to quickly take shelter inside the school. Police arrived at the scene shortly afterward.
West Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Irfan Baloch suggested that the attack might have been an attempted robbery, but emphasized that it was too soon to determine the motive.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed concern over the incident and requested a report from the additional inspector general.
According to a report by the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), over 44,000 criminal incidents were reported in Karachi during the first seven months of 2024.
