KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved a Rs 5.5 billion agreement between the Sindh Police Department and NRTC to start the first phase of the Smart Safe City project in Karachi’s red zone.
The agreement was approved in a meeting held at Chief Minister House in which Interior Minister Zia Linjar, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, IG Police Rifat Mukhtar, MDNRTC Brigadier Asim Ishaq, DG Sindh Saif. Cities Authority Asif Ijaz Sheikh and others participated.
The Chief Minister was informed that 1300 CCTV cameras at 300 locations in the Red Zone and Airport Corridor with FR and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) capability will be installed within eight hours under the Smart Safe City project. will be installed.
The cameras will be linked to the Command and Control Center of the Central Police Office, there is a plan to establish a permanent C&CC at the Karachi Police Office. The Smart Safe City project will have facial recognition and number plate recognition system capabilities.
The system will facilitate hospital surveillance for criminals/suspects, multi-camera tracking and response against suspects, management of offender database, and integration with national, criminal, and other databases.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sindh said that this project had been awaited for a long time and, hopefully, this project will achieve its goal. I want NRTC to complete the first phase in one and a half years.
The Chief Minister said that the population of Karachi is more than 20.38 million, which will further increase by 2030, so control of crime and serious incidents, disaster management, and traffic safety is among their top priorities and their solution is technological integration and cyber security.
