A recent study warns that people who regularly use hair care products may be exposing themselves to potentially harmful chemicals, as these substances tend to linger in the air long after application, according to findings published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.
Researchers, including those affiliated with Purdue University in the US, reveal that during a typical hair care session at home, a person may inhale up to 17 mg of chemicals known to pose potential health risks. The study co-author, Nusrat Jung, expressed surprise at the significant emissions of volatile chemical mixtures from commonly used hair care products.
“We found the results to be extremely alarming. We did not expect to see such significant emissions of volatile chemical mixtures from off-the-shelf hair care products during typical hair care routines,” study co-author Nusrat Jung said.
One particular chemical, decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5 siloxane), prevalent in various personal care items, has been associated with adverse effects on the respiratory tract, liver, and nervous system in laboratory animals. Notably, its use in wash-off cosmetic products has already been restricted in the European Union due to these concerns.
Dr. Jung emphasizes that scented products are also a cause for concern, as some fragrance chemicals can be hazardous when inhaled. Despite previous research indicating the persistence of D5 siloxane in the environment and its potential accumulation in the body, there is limited knowledge about its impact on human health over extended periods.

While existing studies have focused on chemicals present in “wash-off” products like shampoos, little attention has been given to “leave-on” items such as hair gels, oils, creams, waxes, and sprays. The application of heat, as with curling irons or hair straighteners, can further release chemicals into the air.
The cumulative effect of these activities in urban settings, where numerous households simultaneously release chemicals during morning routines, is a cause for concern. Dr. Jung suggests refraining from using such products as the “best solution.” Alternatively, using an exhaust fan during product application can significantly reduce inhalation exposure, with the potential to decrease D5 inhalation by over 90%, according to the study’s model. Dr. Jung advocates for further research on the effects of these chemicals on both individuals and the environment, calling for regulatory action in response to their potential risks.
