MM News: You earned a lot of fame in singing, but your art was not appreciated?
Singer Azhar: Artists are not accepted in Pakistan, but in other countries including neighboring India, art is given importance, and artists are respected; they are honored.
MM News: There was a time when your name was heard on TV and radio, and today you have to work in a workshop. How do you feel?
Singer Azhar: I joined Radio Pakistan in 1973. At that time, people like Azhar Lodhi, Khalid Hameed, Nazir Begum, Akhlaq Ahmed, Naheed Akhtar, and Mehnaz used to come to Radio Pakistan. I was very keen that I had the art of singing in me; I should use this art of mine. Earlier, there was only one channel, so it was not allowed to come forward. There were big slips. Now social media has come, people are getting more scope. The glare of showbiz does something else, but we have to work, we also have to raise children.
MM News: It is said that when an artist approaches retirement, his economic condition starts to deteriorate. What is your opinion on this?
Singer Azhar: Absolutely. We have seen great artists. Mehdi Hasan is our spiritual teacher. Mehdi Hassan fell ill in his last days. How was his last time? The example of Amanat Ali and Waheed Murad is also in front of us. Numerous examples of artists can be given.
MM News: Where did you get the idea for the workshop?
Singer Azhar: If you don’t get an education, you can adopt a similar field; either you will become a tailor or an auto technician. I am satisfied with my life. I love that I got into this field. I have a little education and culture. So I can do this job well.
