YouTube has unveiled a set of new policies regarding AI-generated content on its platform. The company aims to address the potential for misleading viewers due to manipulated media created using AI.
One key change involves the introduction of disclosure requirements for YouTube creators who produce altered or synthetic content that appears realistic. Creators must now disclose the use of AI tools when generating videos depicting events that never occurred or featuring individuals saying or doing things they didn’t. This disclosure is specific to content that “appears realistic” and does not apply universally to all AI-generated videos.

The goal is to provide viewers with context when consuming realistic content that involves AI tools or synthetic alterations, especially concerning sensitive topics like elections or conflicts. YouTube emphasizes the importance of transparency in these instances. The company itself is involved in AI-generated content, with plans to launch a generative AI feature called Dream Screen, automatically labeled as altered or synthetic.
Creators who fail to consistently disclose their use of AI may face consequences, including content removal, suspension from the YouTube Partner Program, or other penalties. YouTube pledges to collaborate with creators to ensure they understand the disclosure requirements before going live. However, the platform may remove AI-labeled content that depicts realistic violence designed to shock or disgust viewers.
Despite these measures, YouTube recently implemented a softer stance on strikes, allowing creators ways to address warnings before they escalate into strikes that could lead to channel removal. This approach raises concerns about potential misinformation spread, as creators might exploit the system.
Other policy changes include the ability for any YouTube user to request the removal of AI-generated or synthetic content, including deepfakes simulating an identifiable individual. However, not all flagged content will be automatically removed, leaving room for parody or satire. YouTube will consider factors such as unique identification, public figures, or well-known individuals when evaluating removal requests.
