Fear of Imran Khan being poisoned

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, has recently approached the court, expressing concerns about the possibility of poison being administered to Imran Khan in jail.

Bushra Bibi’s request was filed through her lawyer, Latif Khosa, in the Islamabad High Court, where relevant ministries and authorities were made parties, and the fear was expressed that Imran Khan could be poisoned while in jail.

Former First Lady emphasized through the request that security measures should be taken to ensure Imran Khan’s safety in prison, and a responsible medical officer should be appointed to ensure the provision of pure food because contaminated food could harm Imran Khan’s life.

In November 2022, there was a threat to Imran Khan’s life, and media reports indicated an intelligence report suggesting another assassination attempt on him.

In Wazirabad, Imran Khan was attacked when a gunman opened fire on his convoy while he was busy with a long march. During the attack, one PTI worker was killed, and more than a dozen others were injured.

This attack forced PTI to delay its march, and Imran Khan alleged the government at that time and General Faisal Naseer, a military officer, for planning his assassination.

The concern did not end there. In August 2023, Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), expressed concerns about the security measures in jail and stated that Imran Khan’s life was at risk.

Earlier, when Imran Khan was arrested, PTI claimed that he did not have adequate facilities at Attock Jail and that he was being subjected to inhumane treatment.

Recently, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar stated that elections could be held without Imran Khan and PTI, emphasizing that elections should be fair and transparent. This drew criticism from PTI leaders, who accused the caretaker government of bias.

PTI demanded clarification from Anwaarul Haq Kakar, stating that elections without Imran Khan would be unconstitutional and unethical, as Imran Khan had been moved to Adiala Jail, where he was serving a sentence.

The question remains about the elements that could target Imran Khan. Could he truly be poisoned in jail? The answer is that such concerns are not new in Pakistan.

Hostile elements could target Imran Khan due to his prominent position as the leader of the popular political party PTI and the former captain of the national cricket team, which took Pakistan to the World Cup. It is essential to ensure Imran Khan’s protection.
