KARACHI: Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) took action on the sale of substandard drugs and declared a batch of ophthalmic medicine as substandard.
The regulatory authority has issued a product recall alert for Comycetin Eye Drops. It said Batch CYF-003 of Comycetin Eye Drops manufactured by Nabi Qasim Industries Karachi, is found to be substandard.
A sample of Comycetin Eye Drops was sent to a testing lab by the Provincial Drug Inspector in Jamshoro. The batch was declared substandard by the Federal Drug Analyst, Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL), Karachi.
Comycetin Eye Drops product alert has been issued for citizens, doctors, and chemists. The eye drops are used for the treatment of bacterial eye infections. It said doctors should not administer patients the affected batch of eye drops.
DRAP said the use of non-standard medicine may be dangerous for the patient’s vision. It said disease can become complicated with substandard antibiotic use. It alerted the pharmaceutical company not to supply the affected batch of eye drops.
The company has recalled the affected batch of Comycetin Eye Drops eye drops from the market. It said chemists should return the affected batch to the pharmaceutical company. DRAP has urged provincial teams to step up surveillance in the medicine market.
Earlier DRAP declared a batch of fever medicine being sold in the market a substandard product while issuing a recall alert for it. The regulatory warned that the use of the substandard product – Pedolil suspension – can have severe consequences, endangering the patient’s life and potentially causing harm to the liver, kidney, or blood.
The drug was prepared from a paracetamol formula and is commonly used to alleviate fever and body aches. The substandard batch 167, manufactured by JASM Pharma Risalpur, was flagged by the Federal Drug Analyst, CDL Karachi.
The manufacturer has been directed to immediately recall the defective batch of product from the market and all pharmacists and chemists working at distributions and pharmacies have been instructed to immediately check their stocks and stop supplying this batch of product.
