ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed to shift Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan from Attock to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
IHC Chief Justice Aamir Farooq heard the case and remarked the former prime minister deserves a better class in jail, saying rights should not be violated.
The chief justice commented that according to the law, under-trial prisoners of Islamabad should be kept in Adiala Jail. He asked why an under-trial prisoner was kept in Attock Jail and not Adiala.
The chief justice added that Imran Khan was kept in Attock Jail in the Toshakhana case in which his sentence has been suspended. The court sought a response from the additional attorney general.
Additional Attorney General Munawar Iqbal told the court that when the PTI chief was arrested in the cipher case, the order stated that he should be kept in Attock Jail. If you send him to Rahim Yar Khan tomorrow then will the trial be conducted there? the judge asked.
He added that Imran Khan should be provided with everything that he has a right to as per jail rules. His rights should not be violated, the CJ remarked.
The court was told that Class A and B have been abolished in the jail. What classes are there now and which one should PTI Chairman get? the chief justice said.
AAG replied that the jail now has ordinary and better classes. The judge said the PTI chairman is a former prime minister and an educated person and deserves better class, the judge said.
Imran Khan’s lawyer Sher Afzal Marwat demanded that the former prime minister ia a sportsman and should be provided with an exercise machine.
Earlier, the Attock Jail superintendent refused to send PTI Chairman Imran Khan to Islamabad owing to security concerns. The Islamabad police vehicles stationed outside Attock Jail to shift Imran Khan to the court were returned, as well as the armoured personnel carrier and police contingent.
