For Hafiz Naeem

Riyatullah Farooqui by Riyatullah Farooqui

Reading Time: 4 mins read

The stage for the election of Mayor Karachi was well and truly decided. The result that was announced was our heartfelt wish because, during the last few years, we have found the People’s Party attracted towards Karachi for the first time since 1985. The next target of this party will now be to win national and provincial seats by influencing the voters of this city and this target can be achieved only by the performance of the local government. While in this regard, no one can be better than Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rahman as an opposition. They are very sensitive about their ego. So he will go to extreme lengths to prove any possible saffron of Murtaza Wahab as dung. The result of this will be that Murtaza Wahab has to keep saffron of such high quality that mere observation is sufficient for him to prove saffron. As if Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rahman’s uncertainty will also go in favor of the people of Karachi.

Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi repeatedly refers to the era of the late Naimatullah Khan. Obviously, this quote has a lot of appeal for those who were born in the early 90s. But we are the product of 1969. So we also remember the era of Abdul Sattar Afghani very well. Those memories are not pleasant at all, even though Afghani Sahib was the self-proclaimed ‘Baba e Karachi ‘.

Our free advice to Hafiz Naeemur Rehman is to make two changes in yourself. The first is to give up the slovenly tone of the city and adopt the polite tone of the political leaders. His tone is that of a bully. This kind of tone is attractive to the under 35s, but not to the intelligentsia. Appeal to people’s consciousness, not their emotions. The second advice is to pay attention to the real problems of the city and give full continuity. Your policy over the years has seen you get behind a single issue and bounce it around on a daily basis only as long as it is useful for propaganda.

As soon as you see that this issue is starting to cool down, you sneak out of the alley to another issue. Bahria Town and K Electric are the two biggest examples of this. Both issues still exist. But Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rahman is indifferent to them because Hafiz only had to distill temporary propaganda which has already happened.

The biggest problem of this city is education. This city was once called the most educated city of Pakistan. Now the generation that has grown up here during the last 30 years is devoid of both curriculum and consciousness. Now big companies here give first priority for employment to those who have educational degrees from outside Karachi, especially from Punjab or Islamabad.

Only those youths of Karachi who have received their education from a non-immigrant area of the city are given preference. What we are going to say now has to be considered by the Urdu-speaking community of Karachi with a cool heart. If they take this trouble, they will realize what disaster the slogan of ‘Humey Manzil Nahi Rehnuma Chahiye’ has brought them and how much this opportunity has been taken advantage of by the mature rickshaw drivers and watchmen of Karachi.

Till the 80s, the situation was that a Pakhtun resident would come from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and take up one of the three or four jobs in the city as a profession. Either he would start driving a rickshaw taxi. Or he would have become the personal driver of a Seth or become a watchman at a bungalow factory or he would have joined the profession of carrying weights in the big warehouses of Karachi. He used to keep his child as a boy in Seth’s house for domestic work. And when he was young, he would hand over his rickshaw to him and retire to the village himself.

When Altaf Hussain appeared and snatched the book from the hands of his most capable generation and seized TT, the schools of the Urdu-speaking areas were quickly destroyed. The Pakhtun rickshaw driver of Karachi was watching this situation carefully. So, within a few years, Pakhtun children went first to school, then to college, and then to university. Now the scenario of the city in today’s history is that Pakhtun rickshaw driver is hardly seen in the city. Now the migrant boys are driving the chungchi and the Pakhtun rickshaw driver’s son is enjoying the cool office of a multinational company. Altaf Hussain destroyed an entire generation and still such unfortunates are seen in teahouses sipping tea.

“Look, Altaf Bhai’s peak period will come again”

That person will be the biggest benefactor of this city who will put his hands on its education system, who will repopulate the educational institutions here, Who will teach the migrant child the principle of excellence in educational the one who will explain that one must start his journey again from the place where his continuity was broken. The lost generation should explain to the next generation that son! imitate your grandfather, not us. That grandfather who was the guardian of the highest civilization and culture of Indian Muslims, whose consciousness was so advanced that their first abode at the destination of migration was a hut. But in just thirty years from that hut, he set up a map and spread it all over the world. So, we are the unfortunate generation who came to Altaf Bhai’s words and destroyed Dadaji’s city. But you will not repeat this mistake. You have to fill his city with the light of knowledge again.

It seems strange that a Pashto-speaking writer from Karachi should be worried about Urdu-speaking children. But there are two reasons for this.

The first is that the migrant generation who migrated to Karachi has a personal favor towards us and that favor too
