PESHAWAR: Customs authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle a large cache of arms from Afghanistan into Pakistan at the Torkham border, serving as a deterrent to others who may be involved in similar activities.
Acting on an intelligence report, officials stopped a container carrying coal and discovered a huge quantity of Russian and Turkish-made weapons concealed inside the vehicle.
The seized weapons included 88 12-bore guns and 600 cartridges. It is believed that the arms were intended to be used to disrupt the law and order situation in Pakistan. The driver of the truck, which was registered as C-8782, has been detained for further investigation.
Additionally, the Afghan driver of the container has been arrested and handed over to local police for further action. Customs officials have launched a probe into the matter.
The recovered weapons have been taken into custody, and the investigation is underway to identify and arrest any other individuals involved in this smuggling attempt.
