Political Discord in Pakistan

Editorial by Editorial

Reading Time: 2 mins read

The political crisis in Pakistan highlights the importance of understanding the complexities of a democratic system. Democracy is not just about presenting citizens with their rights, but also about ensuring that the various branches of government work together in harmony. Unfortunately, Pakistan has a long history of political crises, and the current situation is no different.

One of the key issues at the heart of the current crisis is the fight between the President and the Prime Minister. In Pakistan, the President is a symbolic designation and has no ruling authorities, unlike the Prime Minister. However, this has not prevented the two from clashing with each other, as evidenced by the recent exchange of letters between them.

On 24th March, President Arif Alvi wrote a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reminding him of his duties towards the arrangements of general elections. This was followed by a response from the Prime Minister, in which he criticized the President’s letter, calling it ‘one-sided and anti-government’. Such remarks by the Prime Minister to the President are not praiseworthy, and a democratic country like Pakistan cannot afford such practices.

It is essential to note that the current crisis is not an isolated incident. Pakistan has always been plagued by political crises, and the current generation remembers no era when there was no political crisis. These crises are a reflection of the deep-seated problems within Pakistan’s democratic system.

To address these issues, it is essential to educate citizens on the complexities of democracy and encourage a culture of mutual respect among the various branches of government. Moreover, there is a need to build stronger institutions that can withstand political pressures and ensure that the rule of law prevails.

Furthermore, it is crucial to have a free and independent media that can hold those in power accountable. A vibrant media is essential for the proper functioning of a democracy, as it helps keep the government in check and ensures that citizens are well-informed about the policies and decisions being made on their behalf.

Another important aspect of a well-functioning democracy is the participation of all citizens, regardless of their social, economic, or political background. Pakistan must ensure that all citizens have equal access to education, healthcare, and other basic necessities so that they can fully participate in the democratic process.

It is also essential to have strong and independent judiciary to ensure that the rule of law is upheld. A fair and impartial judiciary is critical to building citizens’ trust in the democratic system, as it ensures that justice is served and that everyone is held accountable for their actions.
