ISLAMABAD: In order to comply with Supreme Court’s orders, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has started preparations to conduct elections in Punjab and KP following the Supreme Court orders, and is expected to start training its staff next week.
On March 1, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had ordered the Election Commission to hold elections in Punjab and KP in 90 days. In its verdict, the SC had declared that the Presidential order of announcing date for elections in Punjab is constitutionally competent.
After the SC verdict, the ECP wrote to President, suggesting to hold polls in Punjab between April 30 and May 7, 2023.

Responding to ECP letter,President Arif Alvi on Friday announced April 30 as the date for the general elections in Punjab after considering the dates proposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
According to media reports, the ECP is also expected next week to announce schedule for holding elections in Punjab following President Arif Alvi’s announcement, setting April 30 as date for elections.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the ECP has decided not to acquire workforce from the judiciary for performing duties of district returning officers (DROs) and returning officers (ROs).
The electoral watchdog is would also send letters to the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Finance to seek security and funds for the general elections in the province.
