ISLAMABAD: An Islamabad court on Monday granted physical remand of Lieutenant General (retd) Amjad Shoaib, who is almost 80 years old, for three days in a case carrying allegations of of inciting the public against national institutions.

Islamabad Police from the Ramna police station had arrested Lt Gen (R) Amjad Shoaib from his residence in the federal capital when an FIR was filed last evening after his television interview.

The FIR was filed with magistrate Owais Khan as the complainant. It was registered under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups, etc) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
According to the FIR, the former military officer incited people to revolt against institutions during a television interview. Currently, he is in police custody and will be presented before a court today.
“Through his remarks and analysis, Lt Gen (retd) Amjad Shoaib has provoked government employees against carrying out their official duties. The aim of his controversial advice to the people, government employees and an opposition party is to comments is to promote enmity among the people.”
The statement of the former military official, the FIR stated, is part of a “planned conspiracy” to weaken the country.
During the proceedings today, Prosecutor Adnan read out the content of the FIR, and accused him of spreading hatred among different groups through his TV interview. He said the photogramatric and voice matching test of Amjad Shoaib was needed.
The defense counsel opposed the physical remand and after a few arguments, prayed to the court to dismiss the case. He said the sections applied in the FIR didn’t match with the facts, and none of his speech content violated any law.
Later, President District Bar Association Qaiser Imam, while giving arguments, told the court that Lt Gen (R) Amjad Shoaib fought two wars, in 1965 and 1971, and today he was being dragged to court. He also prayed to discharge the case.
After hearing the arguments, the court reserved the verdict for a short while, and later approved his physical remand in police custody for 3 days.
