ISLAMABAD: Senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Fawad Chaudhry has alleged that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has practically merged into the federal government and democracy is deliberately being wiped out.

Fawad Chaudhry’s comments came after reports that the ECP was ready to hold local government elections (in Islamabad) in four months. The ECP is reported to have submitted its response with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in case related to postponement of LG elections in the federal capital for second time.
On Thursday, Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Ashtar Ausaf on the directives of IHC met the commission’s officials where the ECP hinted at holding the local government elections in Islamabad in the holy month of Ramazan.

Taking to Twitter, Fawad Chaudhry, who in the past too had criticized ECP for a number of reasons including some of its decisions which were overturned in the superior courts, said that under a planning, democracy was being wiped out from the country.

He said earlier, basic rights were suspended, and now (state) institutions were being neutralized. Fawad Chaudhry termed the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other members of ECP as ‘villain’ for Pakistani nation.
Earlier in a tweet, Fawad Chaudhry termed the recent moves of merger/ unification of different MQM factions in Karachi as an attempt to ‘illuminate the city with pile of gunpowder’ with aim to stop PTI.
