It may be recalled that last month, an FIR was registered against Swati after he launched a barrage of controversial tweets against a state institution.

Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government had condemned the tirade by Azam Swati, calling it a move that will please the enemy states of Pakistan.

Swati has been arrested for second time in the same case over a month after he secured post-arrest bail from a court in the capital city.

PTI’s reaction:

Meanwhile, Chairman PTI Imran Khan expressed shock over the arrest of Senator Azam Swati. Taking to Twitter, he said he was “shocked and appalled at how rapidly we are descending into not just a banana republic but a fascist state”.

I am shocked & appalled at how rapidly we are descending into not just a banana republic but a fascist state. How can anyone not understand the pain & suffering Senator Swati underwent with custodial torture & blackmailing video of him & his conservative wife sent to his family?

— Imran Khan (@ImranKhanPTI) November 27, 2022

Senior leader PTI Dr. Shireen Mazari questioned if the approval for arrest of Senator Azam Swati was given by Senate Chairman.

Seems freedom of speech in Pak today is reserved for the powerful State be it in a press conference, a public address, a press statement or on social media. For the rest, including parliamentarians, this right is denied. @dswpti #ReleaseAzamSwati
