ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry has said that if the government is not interested in investigating the Cypher, then it should ask the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) to send back the copy of the cypher.
“The current prime minister and ministers appeared to be unaware of the declassification of the cypher and that it had been decided in the previous administration’s final federal cabinet meeting to send a copy of the diplomatic cable to the NA’s deputy speaker.” Fawad Chaudhry said while talking on a private TV channel.
“The then federal cabinet asked the NA speaker to launch an investigation and sent him a copy of the cypher. Then the NA speaker provided the chief justice a copy of the cypher for review.
“A copy of the diplomatic cable must be presented in the National Security Committee’s (NSC) meeting chaired by the current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. If it was not presented in the first meeting then what is the reason for chairing the second NSC session,” Fawad detailed.
“On the cypher, the name of the United States (US) was not mentioned until the demarche. Everyone was aware that the cypher originated in the US after the demarche. After demarche, we had also mentioned the name of the US undersecretary.
He expressed disappointment that the current administration had not taken measures to protect the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The PMO is equivalent to the state, according to Fawad Chaudhry, and the audio leaks are harming the country’s image.
Meanwhile, officials informed the federal cabinet members on Friday that the diplomatic cable was “taken” from the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office and that a copy had vanished from the PMO’s files.
Today’s federal cabinet meeting, presided over by PM Shehbaz Sharif, was briefed on the revelations. The former prime minister, former principal secretary, and former ministers will face legal action, the federal cabinet has agreed.
