ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to carry out active relief and rehabilitation activities in the flood-affected areas of Sindh and Balochistan.
More than 580 people so far have died and thousands have lost their homes across Pakistan as torrential rains batter the country.
The prime minister expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and property caused by the monsoon rains.
An estimated 1 million have been affected by heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides since July as Pakistan endured more than 60% of its normal total monsoon rainfall in three weeks.
Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provinces have been the worst affected, with heavy rainfall predicted across Pakistan until Friday. At least one man was killed in Karachi on Tuesday as non-stop rains hit Pakistan’s largest city for two consecutive days.
PM Shehbaz asked the NDMA and PDMA to speed up relief operations in the affected areas at the earliest.
PM Sharif stressed to ensure rescue of the people on priority basis and directed to provide financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to each family.
He emphasized immediate supply of food and clean water to the victims besides ensuring them facilities of accommodation and medicines.
The prime minister also instructed the authorities concerned to be vigilant in the wake of potential rain season and flooding besides take necessary measures in this regard.
