ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Friday approved Rs5.27 per unit in power tariff for K-electric consumers. Karachiites will be paying an additional Rs7/unit on basic tariff from July 2022.
According to Nepra’s handout, the K-Electric (KE) had sought an increase in power tariff by Rs5.31 as fuel adjustment charges for April, however, the power authority approved an Rs5.25 hike.
“A public hearing was held on June 14 over the matter,” Nepra’s handout read, “FCA for April will be charged in the bills of July.”
The Nepra decision will allow the power utility to squeeze an additional Rs10.15 billion from consumers.
Furthermore, The KE is also seeking a whopping Rs11.33 per unit increase in tariff for the month of May 2021 under FCA.
Earlier on June 9, NEPRA had approved a tariff increase of Rs6.49 on the account of FCA for the months of July-September 2021, and Rs1.33 on account of FCA for the months of January-March 2021.
The Nepra will be holding a public hearing on July 4 on the KE request, according to a spokesperson of the power utility.
It is pertinent to mention here that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has already fixed the power tariff at Rs24.82 per unit for the fiscal year of 2022-23 after an enormous raise of Rs7.91 per unit.
The statement further said that the authority determines the new tariff based on the distribution and transmission losses and in terms of revenue of different distribution companies. The NEPRA in its press release said that the estimated cost of capacity cost including NTDC and HVDC is Rs1366 billion.
With latest price hike, the per-unit price of electricity has gone up from Rs16.91 to Rs24.82. The Rupee depreciation along with high oil prices in the international market have been cited as reasons for the power tariff hike.
