LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has nominated its leader Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood as Punjab governor as it seek coved posts in the province.
According to reports, the PPP leadership has informed Mehmood of the decision and his responsibility. Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood had previously served as Punjab’s governor from December 2012 to June 2013.
Mehmood, who was earlier part of PML-F, parted ways with the party after then-president Asif Ali Zardari appointed him for the post.
The PPP has also secured the coveted post of Speaker National Assembly after former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has been elected unopposed. Ashraf was the only candidate to submitted his nomination papers within the deadline, leading him to being elected unopposed.
On April 3, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding member Omer Sarfraz Cheema was sworn in as Punjab Governor after Chaudhry Sarwar was dismissed from his post amid a political crisis in the province.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is yet to form his federal cabinet and appoint governors in the four provinces — Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Balochistan. The MQM-P is expected to receive the the governorship of Sindh, PPP Punjab, JUI-F Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and BNP-M Balochistan.
