ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced to support Prime Minister Imran Khan if the latter proves foreign intervention to topple the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led (PTI) government.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president made these remarks while addressing a press conference in Islamabad accompanied by BAP leader Shahzain Bugti who today announced parting ways with the PTI government.
Shehbaz Sharif has asked the Prime Minister to present the “written threat’ he received from ‘foreign elements’ before the National Assembly. “Khan Sahab, I will support you, if foreign intervention to topple the government is proved,” he said.
Terming the war against PM Imran Khan “political”, Shehbaz Sharif compared the threatening letter with the allegations of the frontman against him in the past by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership. He also asked the prime minister to respond on the foreign funding case being heard against PTI.
A day earlier, the prime minister claimed that the opposition’s no-trust move was part of an alleged “foreign-funded conspiracy” hatched against his government over his refusal to have Pakistan’s foreign policy be influenced from abroad.
He made these allegations at his party’s power show titled Amr Bil Maroof (enjoin the good) and billed as a “historic” event at Parade Ground in Islamabad.
As he moved towards the climax of his speech, the prime minister said: “Attempts are being made to influence our foreign policy from abroad. We have been aware of this conspiracy for months. We also know about those who have assembled the opposition parties but the time has changed. This is not the era of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.”
“Attempts are being made through foreign money to change the government in Pakistan. Our people are being used. Mostly inadvertently, but some people are using money against us. We know from what places attempts are being to pressure us. We have been threatened in writing but we will not compromise on national interest,” he added.
