PM calls for strengthening defence ties with Nigeria

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday appreciated the strong positive trajectory of bilateral relations with Nigeria in the field of defence, security and counter-terrorism.

The prime minister received Minister for Defence of Nigeria Major General (retd) Bashir Salihi Magashi who is visiting the country. he appreciated growing bilateral cooperation in the defence, security and counter-terrorism fields.

Lauding the Nigerian economy on assuming top position in Africa since March 2020, the prime minister called for further deepening of bilateral trade and business ties.

Highlighting Pakistan’s long-standing services and contributions to promoting peace in Africa under the auspices of UN Peacekeeping missions, the prime minister shared his vision of ‘Engage Africa’ policy, which aims to expand diplomatic footprint and advance trade and investment partnerships with the continent.

PM Imran Khan lauded the unanimous adoption of landmark resolution by the UNGA on declaring 15 March as the ‘International Day to Combat Islamophobia.’ He stated that this recognition by the General Assembly would help combating the challenges of racism, discrimination and violence against Muslims, and promoting interfaith harmony.

The prime minister recalled his earlier telephonic conversation with President Muhammadu Buhari and expressed the hope to welcome him to Pakistan at the earliest opportunity.

Earlier, National Security Adviser (NSA) Dr Moeed Yusuf welcomed the five-member delegation headed by Minister for Defence of Nigeria Major General Bashir (retd) Salihi Magashi and stressed the importance of enhancing trade and economic relationship between the two countries.

The NSA welcomed the dignitary on his maiden official visit in Pakistan. Dr Yusuf said, “Pakistan and Nigeria have positive relationship and both the countries tend to support each other at all international forums be it OIC, UN or D8.”

He further elaborated that both countries have strong relationship on diplomatic and military fronts. He mentioned that Pakistan has launched its first-ever National Security Policy document that focuses on economic security.

Dr Yusuf said both the countries have huge economic potential that needed to be explored. Both sides agreed to promote bilateral relations in field of counter terrorism, security and aviation.
