KARACHI: A local court on Monday has indicted Member of Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh for levelling accusations against provincial Minister for Labour and Information Saeed Ghani.

During the hearing, the accused pleaded not guilty to the defamation charges. The court summoned witnesses on February 13. Haleem Adil Sheikh had alleged Saeed Ghani was involved in drug trafficking during a television talk show.

Later while speaking to media, Saeed Ghani said that Haleem Adil Sheikh’s accusations against him will be proven wrong in the court and action will be taken against him as per the law.

He said that people responsible for inflating the prices of petrol, gas and electricity are protesting against it. He further stated that the residents of Sindh will demand accountability of PTI government over shortage of gas.

Dr Rizwan report

It must be mentioned that an investigation report prepared by Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Jamshed Town Dr Rizwan exposed the connections between the brother of Saeed Ghani, target killers and drug peddlers.

The report stated that Farhan Ghani is a facilitator of target killers and drug peddlers and was running an undisclosed network with Hassan alias Natha in Chanesar Goth. The police officer revealed that Hassan alias Natha and Fida Jogi confessed to being in contact with Farhan Ghani, whereas their telephone records were also part of the report.

A close aide of drug peddlers is an employee at Saeed Ghani’s office who is identified as Zaheer Ahmed. It further exposed the involvement of an official of Mehmoodabad police station in drug selling, as well as a worker from the excise department, Rauf, connected with the group.

Saeed Ghani categorically rejected the investigation report of SSP Jamshed Town Dr Rizwan. He claimed that Dr Rizwan had summoned his brother after being appointed as SSP Jamshed Town and demanded to buy eight motorcycles and construct check post in Chanesar Goth.

The minister said Dr Rizwan also demanded furniture and eight motorcycles from his brother for a police check post in the area. Ghani said that his brother refused to fulfill the demands by saying that they would only cooperate with the police in their legitimate activities

He alleged that SP Jamshed Town asked his brother to work for him and drug-related activities have surged after Farhan rejected the police officer’s demands. Ghani continued he has discussed the matter with Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sultan Khawaja and urged him to take action against narcotics.

Haleem Adil Sheikh demanded to form a joint investigation team (JIT) to further probe into Dr Rizwan report about illegal trade of narcotics in Sindh. Haleem had said that Saeed Ghani had filed cases against him for leveling allegations of land grabbing and patronising illegal trade of drugs. He said Farhan Ghani and Farhan Shurla were involved in drug peddling in Chanesar Goth.

Haleem said that his lawyers would file a petition in high court requesting the formation of JIT to further probe into the report. He further alleged that Saeed Ghani was involved in school desks scandal and embezzlement of SESSI school fund and also misappropriation of funds in Labour department.
