KARACHI: The Nasla Tower demolition case has been heard in the Supreme Court Registry today, during which the court ordered the confiscation of 780 square yards of land of the tower and also ordered action against the officers who approved the building plan.

During the hearing, the Attorney General requested the court to ensure implementation of the order for payment of compensation to the victims of Nasla Tower. The court ordered the official assignment of the Sindh High Court to take possession of the land and stop the sale.

During the hearing, the court remarked that departmental and criminal action should be taken against the officers involved, while the anti-corruption department was directed to register a case against these officers and submit a report of criminal proceedings at the next hearing.

On this occasion, Commissioner Karachi informed the court that 5 floors of Nasla Tower have been demolished on which 400 workers are working. To which Commissioner Karachi replied that the structure has disappeared from inside and is only visible from outside.

On the other hand, the Chief Justice further inquired from Commissioner Karachi that he had written that the Sindh Building Authority has obstructed the demolition work. “Such a building is demolished in an hour in the world, what are you doing?” Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin remarked. To which the commissioner said the SBCA tried to block it, after which Justice Qazi remarked that the problem was that the weakness of the state made non-state actors active, the bottom line was that the building was still standing. “If anyone is interfering, it is contempt of court,” he said.

The DG SBCA read out the report on the order of the court, to which the Chief Justice said that he was giving contempt notice to the SBCA, while Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin said that the court order was being implemented. The Chief Justice said that according to the report, SBCA also demanded a bribe from the contractor, after which the Supreme Court directed DG Anti-Corruption to file a case against DG SBCA.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court directed Commissioner Karachi to complete the demolition of Nasla Tower within a week and directed to use all government resources.
