LAHORE: Former Indian cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu is expected to visit Pakistan today on the occasion of the 552nd birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion.
According to details, the Sikh community is celebrating Baba Guru Nanak’s 552nd birthday in Kartarpur with religious fervor. Yesterday, 28 Sikh pilgrims, including the Chancellor of Bhatinda University, Dr. Neelam Grewal, attended the court of Guru Nanak.
Today, 111 Sikh pilgrims, including Indian Chief Minister Punjab Charanjit Jait Singh, Punjab Congress Committee President Navjot Singh Sidhu, and Deputy Chief Minister, will reach Pakistan via the Kartarpur corridor and will be welcomed by the authorities.
Last year, on 16th March 2020, India closed the Kartarpur corridor under the pretext of coronavirus, after which the corridor remained closed till the celebrations of Baba Guru Nanak’s 552nd birthday, which was reopened by the Indian government due to pressure from the Sikh community.
Earlier, the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s government announced the reopening of the Kartarpur corridor, the birthplace of Baba Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion, from November, where traffic on the Indian side had been closed for the past year and a half.
Sikh MPs from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to open the Kartarpur corridor. Indian media say that the Prime Minister finally accepted the request.
