ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has convened a meeting of the National Security Committee on Friday (today) to discuss a wide range of issues including the evolving situation in Afghanistan.
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister House, will be attended by top military leaders and Federal Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, National Security Adviser Moeed Yousuf, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi among others.
The meeting will reportedly focus on the security situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s role will be discussed at length. The internal and external security situation including the Afghan refugee situation and border management is also likely to be taken up during the meeting.
According to reports, the meeting may also review Pakistan’s relations with the United States. The status of reconciliation talks with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) would also be discussed in the meeting.
Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi have repeatedly urged the world to engage with the Taliban regime and provide humanitarian assistance to the war-ravaged country to avoid an economic collapse.
Earlier this week, the prime minister disclosed that the government was negotiating with the TTP with supoport from the Afghan Taliban. However, the surge in violence since Taliban takeover has prompted strong criticism of the government’s initiative.
